When Can You Start PLT? Rolling Intakes and Early Commencement Explained

When can you start Practical Legal Training in Australia?

Most graduates begin PLT after completing an Australian LLB or JD that satisfies the prescribed academic requirements for admission. The exact start date then depends on the provider: some use fixed intakes, while IOLT accepts eligible applicants year-round and allows them to begin after accepting an offer.

Starting early can save time, but only when your academic eligibility and any required approval are clear. Do not enrol on the basis of an assumption about your remaining university subjects.

Fixed intakes and rolling entry are not the same

A fixed-intake provider opens the course on scheduled dates. If you miss the application or document deadline, you may need to wait for the next intake even if you are otherwise eligible.

A rolling-entry provider assesses applications throughout the year. With IOLT, an eligible applicant can begin after the offer is issued and accepted rather than waiting for a semester start date.

Rolling entry gives you control over timing, but it does not mean entry requirements are waived. Your academic record still needs to be assessed and your offer must be accepted before you commence.

The normal start point: after completing your law degree

For most Australian graduates, the simplest route is:

1. Complete an Australian LLB or JD that satisfies the prescribed academic requirements, including the Priestley 11.

2. Obtain your final academic transcript or official completion evidence.

3. Apply to a PLT provider and upload the required documents.

4. Accept the offer and begin the course.

If your university has confirmed completion but the final transcript has not yet been issued, ask what interim evidence can be considered. Do not assume an unofficial results screen will be sufficient.

Can you start PLT before graduation?

Limited early commencement may be possible. IOLTโ€™s current entry information states that a student may be eligible where all prescribed academic subjects are complete, no more than two non-prescribed electives remain and prior written approval has been obtained from the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia.

Each part matters:

โ€ข The remaining subjects must be non-prescribed electives, not outstanding Priestley 11 subjects.

โ€ข No more than two may remain.

โ€ข Written approval must be obtained before PLT starts.

Early commencement is an exception that requires assessment. It is not an automatic entitlement and it should not be treated as a workaround for incomplete prescribed subjects.

What are the Priestley 11 subjects?

The Priestley 11 are the prescribed areas of academic legal knowledge generally required for admission in Australia. They cover criminal law and procedure, torts, contracts, property, equity, company law, administrative law, federal and state constitutional law, civil dispute resolution, evidence, and ethics and professional responsibility.

Universities package and name subjects differently, so the title on your transcript may not exactly match the prescribed-area label. Your degree and academic record need to demonstrate that the requirements have been met. If you transferred universities, studied overseas or received substantial credit, allow extra time for assessment.

What about overseas-qualified applicants?

An overseas law degree does not by itself establish eligibility to start Australian PLT. Overseas-qualified applicants generally need the admitting authority in the relevant Australian jurisdiction to assess their academic qualifications and identify any additional Australian law subjects that must be completed.

Complete the required academic subjects and obtain the relevant assessment documentation before relying on a PLT start date. IOLT will review the documents you provide, but the admitting authority determines the academic requirements for admission.

If you are unsure which authority to approach, begin with the admission body in the state or territory where you intend to seek admission.

Documents that can affect your start date

A rolling start is only useful when the application is complete. Prepare the following early:

โ€ข academic transcripts for all relevant tertiary study;

โ€ข official completion evidence if the degree has recently been awarded;

โ€ข identification documents;

โ€ข any early-commencement approval;

โ€ข an overseas-qualification assessment and evidence of required Australian subjects, if applicable; and

โ€ข accurate contact and residency details for the course application.

Names and dates should be consistent across documents. If they are not, provide the requested supporting evidence instead of waiting for the discrepancy to be discovered during assessment.

Why your PLT start date matters

The start date affects more than study planning. It can influence when you finish workplace experience, receive completion documents, apply for admission and become eligible for roles that require admission.

However, โ€œstart immediatelyโ€ should not be confused with โ€œbe admitted immediatelyโ€. IOLTโ€™s course runs for 24 weeks and includes 20 days of workplace experience. Admission after PLT is a separate process controlled by the relevant admitting authority and Supreme Court.

If you have a graduate-job start date, work backwards. Allow time for PLT completion, completion documents, admission filing, any suitability or disclosure issues and the courtโ€™s timetable. Ask the employer whether admission is required on the first day or within a later agreed period.

How to choose a sensible PLT start week

Flexibility does not mean every week is equally suitable. Before accepting your offer, consider:

โ€ข major work or family commitments during the next six months;

โ€ข whether you can protect regular weekly study time;

โ€ข how and when you will complete the 20 workplace-experience days;

โ€ข upcoming travel or relocation;

โ€ข your preferred admission period; and

โ€ข your payment-plan dates.

It may be worth beginning promptly, but a deliberate start with a workable schedule is better than commencing during a predictably unmanageable week.

Questions to ask before you enrol

Ask every provider:

โ€ข Is the advertised start date guaranteed once my documents are accepted?

โ€ข Are there fixed intakes or can I begin throughout the year?

โ€ข Is workplace experience included in the stated course duration?

โ€ข Can I complete workplace experience concurrently with coursework?

โ€ข What approval is required if I have university subjects remaining?

โ€ข What is the full tuition fee?

โ€ข Are payment plans interest-free?

โ€ข Is coursework fully online or are there compulsory live or campus sessions?

โ€ข In which jurisdictions can the completion documents support an admission application?

Clear answers make it easier to compare the real timeline, not just the headline promise.

Starting PLT with IOLT

IOLT accepts applications year-round. Eligible students can start after accepting their offer, complete coursework 100% online and undertake the required 20 days of workplace experience during the 24-week course.

Domestic tuition is $6,000 and international tuition is $8,700, with six interest-free instalments available. IOLT completion documents support admission applications in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. They do not currently support direct admission applications in South Australia or Tasmania.

To avoid delay, apply with complete academic documents. If you are seeking early commencement, obtain the necessary written approval before starting. If you qualified overseas, complete the admitting authorityโ€™s academic assessment pathway first. Once eligibility is confirmed and your offer is accepted, you can choose a start week that fits your work, finances and admission plan.
