Complete the coursework online from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, regional Queensland or another location. Choose study times that suit you, including after hours, without travelling to campus.

Plan your supervised workplace days alongside the coursework. Ask IOLT to approve your proposed legal role or placement, including the work you will do and who will supervise you.

Course requirements

IOLT’s full PLT course combines seven online subjects and 20 days of supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks. Use your completion evidence for the separate Queensland admission process.

  • Practical legal tasks and assessments

Complete practical tasks such as drafting documents, preparing client advice and managing legal matters. There are no final written exams.

Your Queensland admission application

Queensland applicants prepare documents for the Admissions Board and the Supreme Court using the current admission kits. PLT completion is one part of that application, alongside your academic evidence and suitability requirements.

Applying for admission

  1. Complete your academic requirements

    Complete a recognised law qualification and the prescribed academic areas. Obtain written approval before starting PLT early, if applicable.

  2. Complete IOLT PLT

    Finish your online coursework and 20 days of approved supervised workplace experience.

  3. Apply for admission in Queensland

    Use your academic and IOLT completion documents in the current Queensland admission process. Admission also involves suitability and other requirements.

  4. Apply for a practising certificate

    Once admitted, arrange the certificate and any conditions required for legal practice in Queensland.

IOLT provides the PLT course and completion documents. The admitting authority decides your admission application. Admission and permission to practise are separate steps.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find Queensland admission forms?

The Queensland LPAB admission kits provide the forms and instructions for preparing your Board and Court application. Use the current versions.

Can I complete the coursework outside Brisbane?

Yes. IOLT coursework is 100% online. Your location does not remove the requirement for approved supervised workplace experience.

Does finishing PLT mean I am admitted in Queensland?

No. You must still satisfy the admission requirements and complete the Supreme Court process. PLT completion supplies the practical training evidence.
