Complete IOLT coursework from Sydney, regional NSW or another location without attending campus classes. Choose regular study times that suit your week, including evenings and weekends.
Arrange the 20 days of supervised workplace experience alongside your course. If you already have a legal role, ask IOLT to approve its duties and supervision before relying on it.
Course requirements
IOLT’s full PLT course combines seven online subjects and 20 days of supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks. Use your completion evidence for the separate New South Wales admission process.

- Seven online subjects across practical legal skills and practice areas
- Practical legal tasks and assessments
Complete practical tasks such as drafting documents, preparing client advice and managing legal matters. There are no final written exams.

- An eligible workplace and approved supervisor
- Workplace experience completed alongside the course
Use an eligible current role or arrange a suitable placement. Ask IOLT about placement assistance if needed; suitable opportunities are subject to availability.

Apply for admission in New South Wales
Use your academic and IOLT completion documents in the current New South Wales admission process. Admission also involves suitability and other requirements.
Apply for a practising certificate
Once admitted, arrange the certificate and any conditions required for legal practice in New South Wales.
IOLT provides the PLT course and completion documents. The admitting authority decides your admission application. Admission and permission to practise are separate steps.

Where do I apply for NSW admission?
Apply through the NSW LPAB online Admission Portal after reading its current applicant guide. Your IOLT enrolment application is a separate process.
Can I study from regional NSW?
Yes. The coursework is 100% online, so you can study from your usual location. You still need approved supervised workplace experience.
Can an existing NSW legal job count?
IOLT can review the legal duties, supervisor and supporting evidence. Have the arrangement approved before relying on it for the workplace requirement.
