Before you apply

Check that you are ready to start PLT

Most students begin after finishing an Australian law degree and the prescribed academic areas. If your degree is not complete, get the required written approval before you start.

You are usually ready when

  • your Australian LLB or JD is complete, or you have written approval to start early
  • the prescribed academic areas for admission have been completed
  • an official academic transcript is ready for review
  • you have a plan for 20 days of supervised workplace experience

Your next four steps

From law degree to admission

The training and admission stages are connected, but they are not the same. Follow them in order and keep your supporting documents.

  1. Step 1

    Confirm your academic eligibility

Complete an Australian LLB or JD that satisfies the prescribed academic areas. Seek approval before any early start.

  2. Step 2

    Complete IOLT PLT online

Finish the 24 week program and 20 days of supervised workplace experience from Melbourne, regional Victoria or elsewhere.

  3. Step 3

    Prepare your VLAB application

Gather academic records, IOLT completion evidence, character material and any disclosures required by the current process.

  4. Step 4

Attend admission and arrange your practising certificate

Complete the Supreme Court of Victoria admission process, then apply for the practising certificate that matches where and how you intend to practise.
