Plan supervised workplace experience within the course period. Use an eligible legal role or arrange an approved placement with suitable duties and supervision.

Course requirements

IOLT’s full PLT course combines seven online subjects and 20 days of supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks. Use your completion evidence for the separate Victoria admission process.

  • Practical legal tasks and assessments

Complete practical tasks such as drafting documents, preparing client advice and managing legal matters. There are no final written exams.

From IOLT PLT to Victorian admission

The Victorian Legal Admissions Board reviews eligibility and issues compliance certificates for admission. The Supreme Court of Victoria admits applicants. Completing PLT supplies the practical training evidence for that separate process.

Applying for admission

  1. Complete your academic requirements

    Complete a recognised law qualification and the prescribed academic areas. Obtain written approval before starting PLT early, if applicable.

  2. Complete IOLT PLT

    Finish your online coursework and 20 days of approved supervised workplace experience.

  3. Apply for admission in Victoria

    Use your academic and IOLT completion documents in the current Victoria admission process. Admission also involves suitability and other requirements.

  4. Apply for a practising certificate

    Once admitted, arrange the certificate and any conditions required for legal practice in Victoria.

IOLT provides the PLT course and completion documents. The admitting authority decides your admission application. Admission and permission to practise are separate steps.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides my Victorian admission application?

VLAB considers eligibility and issues compliance certificates. The Supreme Court of Victoria admits applicants through its admission process.

Do I need to attend campus in Melbourne?

No campus attendance is required for IOLT coursework. The separate supervised workplace component must still be completed in an approved arrangement.

Is a VLAB application part of IOLT enrolment?

No. IOLT enrolment is for your PLT course. You make your admission application through the VLAB process and meet the authority’s requirements.
