Flexible study, on your schedule

Study online from Sydney, regional NSW or another location. Organise regular coursework sessions around your commitments, including evenings and weekends if those times suit you.

Complete the full course’s seven online subjects and 20 supervised workplace days. Have your workplace duties and supervisor approved, and plan your NSW admission application separately.

Before you enrol

  1. Get your NSW assessments

    Apply to the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board for assessment of your overseas academic qualifications. If you also completed practical training or were admitted overseas, follow its guidance on a practical training assessment.

  2. Send your assessment to Admissions

    Send your written assessment, academic records and results for any required Australian study. Admissions will check your documents and explain the full-course enrolment requirements.

  3. Enrol in the full PLT course

    Meet the academic entry requirements and complete IOLT’s enrolment steps. Your offer confirms the full-course fee and start arrangements.

  • Practical legal tasks and assessments

Complete practical tasks such as drafting documents, preparing client advice and managing legal matters. There are no final written exams.

  • Workplace experience completed alongside the course

Use an eligible current role or arrange a suitable placement. Ask IOLT about placement assistance if needed; suitable opportunities are subject to availability.

Your PLT enrolment and your NSW admission application are separate. Once you have completed the academic and practical training requirements, follow the LPAB applicant guide and online Admission Portal process.

Applying for admission

  1. Have your qualification assessed

    Obtain the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board’s written assessment and complete any required Australian academic study.

  2. Complete the full PLT course

    Complete seven online subjects and 20 days of approved supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks.

  3. Apply for admission in New South Wales

    Follow the current New South Wales admission process using your academic evidence, assessment and PLT completion documents.

  4. Apply for a practising certificate

    After admission, apply for the practising certificate required for your intended legal work.

IOLT provides the PLT course and completion documents. The admitting authority decides your admission application. Admission and permission to practise are separate steps.

Frequently asked questions

Will the NSW LPAB assess my overseas law degree?

The LPAB assesses overseas academic qualifications for NSW admission. If you have also completed practical training and been admitted overseas, its practical training assessment may be relevant as well.

How long does the full PLT course take?

The full IOLT course runs for 24 weeks. Complete seven online subjects and 20 days of supervised workplace experience, then prepare your separate NSW admission application.

Does an overseas degree mean I pay international tuition?

An overseas qualification alone does not determine the fee category. Your IOLT offer confirms the applicable tuition and payment option.
