Before you enrol

  1. Get your assessment and NT directions

    Follow the NT Board’s guidance for NSW LPAB assessment of your overseas qualifications. Then obtain NT adoption of that assessment and any further directions before choosing your training.

  2. Send your assessment to Admissions

    Send your written assessment, academic records and results for any required Australian study. Admissions will check your documents and explain the full-course enrolment requirements.

  3. Enrol in the full PLT course

    Meet the academic entry requirements and complete IOLT’s enrolment steps. Your offer confirms the full-course fee and start arrangements.

Complete seven online subjects and 20 days of supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks. Use your IOLT completion documents when applying for admission in the Northern Territory.

  • Practical legal tasks and assessments

Complete practical tasks such as drafting documents, preparing client advice and managing legal matters. There are no final written exams.

  • Workplace experience completed alongside the course

Use an eligible current role or arrange a suitable placement. Ask IOLT about placement assistance if needed; suitable opportunities are subject to availability.

Prepare your NT application

The NT Supreme Court publishes admission guidelines, forms and ceremony information. Your academic and practical training certificates need to address the NT requirements, even where your study was completed interstate.

  • Follow the NT Board’s adoption and admission directions
  • Arrange completion certificates that address NT admission requirements
  • Confirm filing and ceremony arrangements with the NT Supreme Court Registry

Applying for admission

  1. Have your qualification assessed

    Obtain the Northern Territory admitting authority’s written assessment and complete any required Australian academic study.

  2. Complete the full PLT course

    Complete seven online subjects and 20 days of approved supervised workplace experience over 24 weeks.

  3. Apply for admission in the Northern Territory

    Follow the current Northern Territory admission process using your academic evidence, assessment and PLT completion documents.

  4. Apply for a practising certificate

    After admission, apply for the practising certificate required for your intended legal work.

IOLT provides the PLT course and completion documents. The admitting authority decides your admission application. Admission and permission to practise are separate steps.
