Entry requirements for Practical Legal Training

Entry requirements

Australian graduates, early-start applicants and overseas-qualified lawyers have different document requirements. Admissions reviews your evidence before confirming an offer.

You have completed an Australian law degree

Apply with your academic transcript and completion evidence. Your qualification must satisfy the prescribed academic areas, commonly called the Priestley 11.

IOLT reviews your documents before confirming your enrolment.

You are still finishing your degree

An early start may be available where no more than two subjects remain, neither covers a prescribed admission area, and you are enrolled in the remaining subjects while completing PLT.

You must obtain the relevant admitting authority’s written approval before commencing. Check its process and any conditions that apply to you.

You studied law overseas

Ask the relevant Australian admitting authority to assess your qualifications and training first. Its written outcome identifies any further academic study, practical training or other requirements.

Send IOLT the assessment and evidence that you have completed any required academic study. Your assessment determines the PLT pathway to consider.

Documents for your application

Once your eligibility is confirmed, choose online study times that suit your commitments, including after hours. Apply for admission separately after completing PLT.

Which application documents apply to you?

A completed Australian law qualification, an early-start application and an overseas assessment each require different evidence. Tell Admissions which situation applies, rather than sending documents without explaining the course you are seeking.

For an early start, include your remaining subjects and the admitting authority’s written permission. For overseas qualifications, include the assessment and results for any directed Australian academic study.
