Do overseas lawyers need PLT in Australia?
Sometimes. The correct first step is an official assessment of your overseas academic and practical training qualifications.
Do not enrol before assessment
An Australian admitting authority must decide how your overseas education, practical training and legal experience compare with local admission requirements. Its written direction will tell you whether you need Australian law subjects, full or partial PLT, or other evidence.
Being admitted or experienced overseas can be relevant, but it does not automatically produce an exemption. Applicants are assessed individually and Australian ethics, trust accounting and local practice requirements are especially important.

Choose an Australian jurisdiction
Apply to the admitting authority in the state or territory where you plan to seek admission.

Submit academic and practice evidence
Provide certified qualifications, subject details, practical training records, admission evidence and current practice history.

Receive written directions
The authority identifies any additional academic study, practical training or evidence required.

Complete only what is required
Finish the directed work, then apply for admission within any time limit imposed by the authority.
Assessment comes before PLT
An overseas law degree is not assessed by a PLT provider. The admitting authority compares your academic study and practical training with Australian admission requirements. Starting PLT first can waste time and money if academic subjects are still outstanding.
Overseas experience may affect the result
Applicants already admitted overseas can provide detailed evidence of their work and competence. The authority decides whether that evidence supports any exemption. Applicants who completed overseas study but were not admitted may face different requirements.

If your direction requires an approved Australian PLT course, IOLT offers online coursework, a 24 week course structure and a total international fee of $8,700, payable in six instalments of $1,450.

Does every overseas lawyer need the full Australian PLT course?
No single answer applies to every applicant. The admitting authority assesses your qualifications, training and practice and directs what further work is required.
Can IOLT assess my overseas law degree?
No. Academic and practical training assessments are made by the admitting authority for your intended admission jurisdiction. IOLT can discuss PLT after you receive that direction.
Does overseas legal experience remove PLT requirements?
It may be relevant, but exemptions are not automatic. You need detailed evidence and the admitting authority makes the decision.
Should I complete Australian law subjects or PLT first?
Follow the sequence in your written assessment. In many cases outstanding academic requirements must be resolved before PLT.
